Before you can drive you must:

• Have a provisional driving licence (Form D1 available from the post office).
• Be able to read a number plate from 20.5 metres
• Be 17+ years of age

(If you are aged 16 and receiving disability living allowance, mobility component, at the higher rate and want to drive a car, your licence will have vehicle categories B K P and F valid from 16 and category A valid from 17)

It is advisable to wear comfortable clothes and shoes when driving.

Recommended learning aids:

If you decide to get some private practice with a parent or friend you must:

• Make sure the car is road worthy, taxed and insured
• Make sure L plates are fitted to the front and back of the vehicle
• Make sure the person supervising is aged 21 years or over and has held a full driving licence for at least three years

After passing your practical driving test.

After passing your practical driving test please make certain that you understand the classifications on your driving licence before you drive any vehicle other than a standard motor car. If you wish to upgrade your driving licence then there are a few things that you need to know.

Check the catagories on your licence, if you wish to drive a vehicle towing a trailer or with a weight of over three and a half tons you will need to take an extra driving test.
